From thorns to stars would be the right description for Mamulu fortress. This military fortress is located on the island of Lastavica and is about 170 years old. During the Second World War, it was a concentration camp of fascist Italy, where more than 2,000 people, mostly women and children, were imprisoned. It was named after the Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula, who initiated the construction of the fortress, whose role was to prevent enemies from sailing into the Bay of Kotor.
Mamula went from a symbol of pain, suffering and hardship, through an abandoned and neglected place, to a complete transformation into an elite tourist attraction.

Mamula is located on a circular island with a diameter of 200 meters, between the Luštica and Prevlaka peninsulas. It belongs to the Herceg Novi part of the bay. Given that this is a former prison and camp, there were a lot of divided opinions about its reconstruction. From those who considered it a desecration of the memory of the victims, to those who agreed that Mamula should be given a new life with respect for the victims, the events and the historical significance of this place. This is how this unique architectural building, which was neglected for over 80 years, has today been transformed into a luxury resort.

At the very entrance to the fortress, a Memorial Gallery was built, which can be reached via an ancient bridge and a large gate. The idea is to present here three periods of Mamula, the historical part, the period when it was a military fortress and the years of restoration and reconstruction.

Be that as it may, the island of Mamula and the fortress that dominates the island leave a special impression on every visitor. Due to its unique position on the Adriatic Sea, which made it a strategically important place in the past, Mamula today, in addition to history, offers incredible landscapes with a fortress as a guardian of the bay. It is suitable for one-day trips if your accommodation is in Kotor or Herceg Novi, because a short boat ride takes you there. Despite the dark and dramatic past, this is a completely new era for Mamula, which will write brighter pages of its history.

Allow yourself to experience Mamula from personal experience and only then will you get a real impression of her. Book an apartment in Montenegro and don't let any twilight spoil the dawn in your life.
